This is my hurricane list that I’ve used over the many years of hurricanes we’ve been through. Last year some people went weeks without electricity. I’m thankful that my house miraculously had power when most of the county is out. The following is a list of items that make after hurricane life bearable.
Some items may seem unnecessary but in some instances, stores may be closed or you may be stuck in your neighborhood. Also, stores were out of bread for a while, so stock up.
- Get your grill ready, with utensils and anything you need to use it
- Prep and test generator
- Fill up all gas tanks
- Batteries
- Matches/ lighter
- Lots of small tea lights to use at night as night lights- put in hallways, bathrooms – you’d be surprised at how dark it can get. The lights go out after about 2-3 nights, so get extra, you’ll be glad you did. I bought mine at michaels
- electric candles, lanterns, flashlights
- Radio or battery operated tv
- extra deodorant, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, paper towels, toilet paper
- Animal food
- Large black Garbage bags for outdoor debris
- food ideas: bagels, food to grill, snacks, gatorade, soup, canned items- beans, corn, tomato (chili seasoning) bread, crackers, nuts, raisins, fruit, pudding, cereal, breakfast bars, protein drinks, nutella, wraps, deli meats , canned meat,
- baby items, diapers, wipes, extra bottles, pedialyte
- clorox
- antibacterial soap and hand wipes, antiseptic, face wipes
- ice
- medicine- band aids, motrin, first aid box, etc.
- Paper cups, paper plates, plastic ware
- freeze water in plastic freezer bags -trust me, you’ll thank me later- lay them flat in freezer
- fill up large tubs of water – not just your bathtub. I fill large storage containers with water for : animals, brushing teeth, wiping counters, cleaning dishes, flushing toilet. I’d fill 2-3 containers- and cover them up with a lid. I use the largest storage container I can find at walmart
- battery operated fans – lots!
- instant coffee
- phone battery packs
- laptop batteries
- sunscreen
- insect repellent
- prepare valuables/paperwork in a safe and waterproof place : license, ss card, insurance, certificates, etc
- have insurance info ready
- glasses or extra contact solution
- coolers
- flex tape
- non electric can opener
- cash on hand
- fire extinguisher
- small paper cups to brush teeth
- dry hair shampoo
- hand written list of phone numbers
- small plastic shoe box bins (with lid) filled with water per child for brushing teeth
- extra garbage bags
- and water, water, water, water, water
** I also like to make sure all laundry and dishes are clean before the storm hits. I clean floors and vacuum- you never know how long you’ll be without electricity.
